Thomas Crapper - Under the Stairs
Winchester
I couldn’t have been more delighted than when I was asked to design a Thomas Crapper toilet under the stairs. Every detail in this space is authentically Thomas Crapper: the traditional white high-level cistern, the classic frames, the elegant pull handle, and of course the signature Victorian style toilet. To complete the scheme, we added a beautifully proportioned traditional sink, available in both compact and larger sizes, and even a Thomas Crapper toilet paper holder and paper.
A particularly special find for this project was a vintage Thomas Crapper & Co. Ltd. sign, bearing the inscription “IP Nightly.” Discovered at a reclamation centre, it was carefully sandblasted and repainted to restore its former glory. We placed it proudly on the front of the door, adding a touch of wit and authenticity that makes this small cloakroom truly unique.
Designing this room was an absolute joy. Despite its small footprint, the architect cleverly helped extend the space into the kitchen, allowing us to create a perfectly functional yet characterful interior. Bringing a traditional Victorian feel to such a unique little corner of the home was truly a rewarding project.
